You know what this world needs? Another edition of Minecraft.
Mojang’s already given us Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, Minecraft: PC Edition, Minecraft: PS3 Edition, Minecraft: PS4 Edition, Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Minecraft: PS Vita Edition, Minecraft: Story Mode and Minecraft: Windows 10 Beta Edition (w/ VR Capabilities!). They even have Minecraft: Education Edition in order to make sure no generation goes un-brainwashed.
In Mojang’s ever going quest to control the world, they’ve partnered up with Warner Bros. (providers of critical hits Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad) to bring movie lovers a Minecraft movie.
This decision to make a Minecraft movie no doubt comes from the huge success of 2014’s The LEGO Movie; businesses is business.
Previously, WB had asked Jon Spaihts (writer of Marvel’s Doctor Strange) to write the screenplay for their Minecraft movie, but ultimately passed on him. Now, they’ve aimed their contracts towards Jason Fuchs whose previous works include Ice Age: Continental Drift and Pan. Neither can be really called a hit of any sorts, but they definitely did well to attract the young audience (doesn’t really take much effort).
If Fuchs’ draft bodes well for WB, he will joining Rob McElhenney, creator and co-star of FX’s very raunchy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, in his first feature-length directorial debut.
It’s highly unlikely McElhenney will be bringing his brand of Sunny-esque adult humor to the project, but one can hope. A mash-up of Ice Age‘s childlike atmosphere and Sunny‘s humor will definitely be a breath of fresh air.
The Minecraft Movie, creatively titled Minecraft: The Movie, is set to release in May of 2019. Now enjoy this video of Rob McElhenney’s Sunny character Mac get analyzed by a therapist.
