The Legend of Zelda is easily one of the most recognizable names in video games. And though many people unfamiliar with the franchise think that you play as a female character named Zelda; gamers are more than aYoung_Link_Artwork_1_(Ocarina_of_Time)ware that rather, you take control of an elven boy named Link, on a quest to rescue Zelda – hence the name. But after 17 entries to the franchise, it seems that Link has become a tad, ordinary. At least in my opinion. Sure Nintendo insisting on never allowing our green garbed hero to actually speak (and no, the iconic “yaahh!” every time you charge your Master Sword to cut all the surrounding bushes, doesn’t count) may have a little, if not a lot, to do with it. But I’ve been wanting a game for some time now that introduces a different playable character, even if it’s simply one dungeon that you play as him/her. Nintendo has done that with it’s biggest franchise, Mario, giving players the opportunity to play as Peach, Luigi etc. But never Zelda. But all that may change with the company’s upcoming and much anticipated entry to the series. The Legend of Zelda WiiU as it is currently dubbed has rumours circulating that it will allow players to choose either a male or female main character to play as throughout the game.

The rumour comes from noted Nintendo blogger Emily Rogers, who took to twitter with the following posts:

Rumor #1: Yes, Zelda is coming to both Wii U and NX. I confirmed it with a ton of people. You can choose which one to get. Or get both.”

Not exactly sure what, “a lot of people” means, but honestly, we all knew this was going to happen. Many speculate that the game will release alongside the release of the NX as a launch title for the console; though that is yet to be confirmed.  She goes on to post the second rumour, which goes as follows:

Rumor #2: I heard from multiple sources that you can choose between a male or female as your playable character in Zelda.”

Hurrah for gender equality! Took a couple decades, but doesn’t matter, we’ve finally made it! Rogers closes her delicious rumour-filled tweets with one last tweet regarding the game:

Rumor#3: There is voice acting for most of the characters…except Link.”

Of course Link doesn’t talk. Were you really expecting him to? What’d be awesome was if they made the female protagonist a brash, foul, witty and loud-mouthed badass of a heroine.

I think it’s really awesome that Nintendo is allowing players the option to play as a female character. I’m sure we’ll be hearing a plethora of raging, sexually frustrated fanboys that are outraged by this, but let their ludicrous outcries fall on deaf ears. Nothing has been said on how this female character will look, whether she will have different sets of skills, or even affect the overall story. But here’s hoping that not only is this rumour true, but that all the details are released soon.

Whatever the case, I just pray that they don’t name her Linkle. Please, for the love of God Nintendo, no.
