After the initial report that there would be three sequels to the hit film Avatar, James Cameron has announced that this is incorrect. There will, in fact, be four new sequels. This was officially confirmed today by Cameron from the 20th Century Fox Panel at CinemaCon.
The Avatar films were originally expected to be a trilogy; this then increased to a series of four, and now it is a series of five. According to Cameron, this is because the stories that they were developing just kept growing, and fitting them into just three more films would not have been enough.
As the reigning champion for highest-grossing film of all time, this information didn’t exactly come as a surprise.
However, it seems as though these new releases could potentially overthrow the original film from this post. When talking about the scripts and designs, Cameron informed us that “the pure imagination is far beyond the first film”. Although the sequels will have similar imagery to the original, there will be new characters, creatures, environments, and much more.
Avatar 2 was originally rumoured for a release date in 2014, but the work was delayed and the film has yet to be released. However, Cameron has revealed that this film is now expected to be released by the end of 2018. Following that, the next three films are scheduled to arrive in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
Each of the sequels will be stand-alone films, and therefore will be able to be viewed individually. Together they will create an “epic saga”, says Cameron.
At CinemaCon, he stated that they have “decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process”. If the designs of the next films have really been as well-received as Cameron declared, I think it’s safe to say that the Avatar franchise has a very promising future ahead of it.
