Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully immersive experience that the franchise deserves,” Universal said in a statement. “To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.

The quote above is not from Guillermo Del Toro (the movie-making love of my life). Instead, it comes from Universal Studios who as of last year has become the financial and distributing partner of Legendary Pictures (Pacific Rim’s production company).

Del Toro’s quote went more like, “We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.” Thank you, Del Toro. Short and to the point; just how I like it.

When Universal pulled Pacific Rim 2 from its original calendar date of August 4, 2017, fans took to the internet in search of any signs that the movie was still going to be made. After noticing no information from either side, people began to speculate that the film was cancelled.

In order to calm everyone down, both Universal and Del Toro spoke up and gave everyone the information they needed; Pacific Rim 2 is indeed happening…just not soon.

Why wouldn’t it? It made $411 million! That’s trilogy money right there.

Although movie buff qualms have been settled with this update, there is still no new official release date for the film. The most information we’ve been given at the moment is that Guillermo Del Toro and his creative team will be delivering an official screenplay for the film pretty soon.

If all goes well with Pacific Rim 2 in terms of sales and critical/public reviews, then the wheels for the jointly created Legendary Monsters Universe will begin to roll even faster and allow movie fans everywhere the chance to see all the mega monsters battle it out on the big screen.

My money’s on Cthulhu. Even if he isn’t in any of the movies, he still comes out as champion.
