After 13 years, GameTrailers is closing down today. Thank you for your continued support over the years. It has been an adventure.”

That was the Tweet that was posted by the sites’ official Twitter account a few hours ago. Before the times of YouTube, GameTrailers was once the paramount company in Video Games in terms of…well trailers, but also a place where gamers went for all their gaming videos including reviews, gameplay clips, exclusive interviews etc. For many of us, myself included, it was the one place where we would all go and constantly refresh the page during E3 to be updated on the latest announcements. So to hear of it’s closing (though logically forthcoming) is very, very saddening.

Gametrailers was owned by Viacom, and was sold to Defy Media only a mere year ago; a deal that led to the laying off of many of the company’s employees, and the number of employees continued to decrease as the year progressed. Though the site had many great and unique shows such as GT Retrospective, Top 10s, and Pop Fiction, clearly the impact of new mediums such as Twitch and the behemoth known as YouTube, took a toll on the site’s viewership, which led to this day. What’s interesting, however, is that according to GT’s associate editor Ben Moore, the employees at GameTrailers found out about the shutting down of the site only hours before. Moore took to the web and posted the following:

Brandon Jones, the founder, boss, and most importantly and memorably, the VOICE of GameTrailers took to Twitter to further solidify the closing of the long-running site with the following:

Today is the last day of GameTrailers. I wish it wasn’t so. I love all of our fans like family. Thank you for letting me do this job.”

If you’ve ever watched a review or almost anything else on the site and heard the beautiful, soothing, and resonant voice of a man, it was Jones. (Honestly, sometimes I’d watch a review of a game I wasn’t even interested in in the slightest, simply to hear his voice)

The site also just did one last Twitch stream tonight with all their fans. It’s definitely sad to see them go; it’s been a great 13 years, and everyone on that site should be proud and know that they were a part of something great.
